How I Beat Impostor Syndrome

Posted on November 13, 2015 by Jensie in Business Growth

I think we all deal with this. After a few years in the biz, I finally feel like I've earned some stripes, but still every once in awhile (or like every week), I feel like a humongus FAKE.

I think it's human nature. We feel like we don't really know what we're talking about or wonder why anyone would listen to us—let alone pay us for what we think we know. But you do know something, you do have something to offer, and probably someone has paid you already for your expertise. And if you aren't to that part yet, I'll bet someone has asked for your advice.

So how do you get over the feeling of being a fraud? Here's what I do:

1. I take a breath. Usually these feelings come when I'm already overwhelmed and stressed out. I take a minute to just breathe and try to come back to reality.

2. I review past successes. Sometimes we get caught up in numbers or our perceived failures and forget that we have done something right before. Probably even lots of times.

3. I read "love letters" from my clients. I have collected a few—I keep them handy for bad days. They really help.

4. I check my goals for the week and year. When I focus on what I can still accomplish, I remember I can choose where I spend my energy. I can keep thinking all the "can'ts" or I can buck up and focus on the "cans" and "wills" left on my list.

5. I say "fuck it" and just move on. I tend to be a negative and cynical person, and sometimes depressed. There is a mean inner voice that comes out sometimes and she can be really mean. There are days that I tell her to shove it so that I can get on my list of ass-kicking duties!

So I get it, but you need to prove your expertise, and sometimes that means you have to fake it until you make it. Being an entrepreneur means being uncomfortable, and unless you're willing to live outside of that comfort zone, you can't be successful. Need help? Give me a call and I can help you get out of your head and get moving!
