#WorkitWednesday – What’s a “Brand”?

Posted on May 06, 2015 by Kara in Work it Wednesday

In order to keep track of their cattle, farmers typically brand their animals. This is a process that involves firing up and rod and burning a unique mark onto the side of the cattle so that the farmer can identify the cattle in their herds. According to Wikipedia, this practice dates all the way back to ancient Egypt. Interesting that looking for a way to set apart what is yours goes back so far.

When I think of the word brand, I always think about cereal. Particularly in the difference between “name brand” and “bargain brand” cereal. But that’s not what brand means. Brand at its most basic, according to Webster, is a category of products that are all made by a particular company and all have a particular name. Or, more simply, a particular kind or type of something. That’s it. Wikipedia uses the word “distinguish” to describe that how a brand sets apart on seller’s product from another. So how does that help any of us figure out what a brand is or how to do “branding”?

Like a cattle brand, two aren’t meant to be the same. Every brand has a different personality. Over the next few months, we’re going to help you find out what your brand’s personality is and how to incorporate it into your marketing. We’ll be rolling out some fun blog posts, activities, and if the web development gods smile upon us, a new website all focused on helping you define and display your brand.

For now, check out last week’s blog for more about identifying voice in your brand and sign up for our (new! improved! coming soon!) newletter for more information on defining your brand.
